The shortlisted finalists for the 2018 BBSRC Innovator of the Year competition have been announced. Twelve finalists will compete to be named Innovator of the Year 2018 at The Mermaid in London on 16 May 2018.
The UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship scheme (FLF), aims to develop, retain, attract and sustain research and innovation talent in the UK. Providing up to seven years of funding, for at least 550 early-career researchers and innovators, the scheme will tackle difficult and novel challenges.
Professor Melanie Welham has been selected to be the Executive Chair of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) when UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) comes into being in April 2018. Professor Melanie Welham is currently interim Chief Executive of BBSRC having previously served as Executive Director, Science for BBSRC.

James Field, winner of BBSRC Early Career Innovator of the Year 2017, has recently secured $3.66 million in investment for his company LabGenius and features in American magazine Forbes’ list of the 600 most influential people in the world under age 30. Field and a group of fellow Imperial College London PhD students created LabGenius in 2012 to commercialise their ground-breaking new technology: the ability to produce trillions of variations of gene sequences, which can be used to engineer high-value proteins.
