This meeting will assess sustainable routes for large-scale removal of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. It will support the UK in meeting the Paris Agreement by making a major step towards achieving net-zero emissions, and place the UK in a leading position to benefit from the £400 billion future global market in greenhouse gas removal.

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) aims to provide a world leading research and innovation programme that will establish greenhouse gas removal (GGR) demonstrator facilities, coordinated by a Hub. BBSRC is convening an interdisciplinary meeting on behalf of AHRC, ESRC, EPSRC, NERC and Innovate UK, which aims to network the wider community and look at Green Houses Gas Removal research issues. Potential demonstrators could cover areas such as (but not limited to):

  • Bioenergy and Carbon Capture and storage (BECCS)
  • Direct Air Carbon Capture and Storage (DACCS)
  • biochar
  • afforestation
  • enhanced terrestrial weathering.

These will demonstrate the effectiveness, cost, and limitations of large-scale GGR.

Findings will be integrated by a Directorate Hub, which will also provide underpinning research to address the business, environmental, social, cultural, perception and communication, ethical, and governance issues, and support the progress of GGR technologies to readiness.
